Digging Deeper: Arid Lands Agriculture is our brand new 6th through 12th grade Common Core-aligned field trip program designed to teach students about the challenges of producing food in regions with water scarcity and sustainable solutions to these problems. In this 3 hour experiential field trip, students will examine the role of water in our ecosystem, move water through a model irrigation system, and plant, maintain and harvest food crops that are cultivated in arid regions throughout the world. In our Desert Edibles Garden regional plants demonstrate to students that the Sonoran Desert has provided food for peoples in our region for centuries. Tying it all together, students will prepare and eat a dish using arid lands crops and discover that we can grow nutritious, flavorful foods while remaining stewards of our scarce water resources in a warming world.
