Youth Opportunities

Calling all Tucson-area teachers!

Educators are you looking for a fantastic field trip for your students? At TVF students get their hands dirty as they learn about everything it takes to grow healthy food. From composting, to planting, to feeding chickens, students do it all! If that sounds like fun, then it is time to register for students for their 2021-2022 TVF field trip.

We are just finishing up an epic summer filled with safe, in-person programming.  We know we will be hosting field trips in the fall, but we are just not quite sure what they will look like.  We DO know that they won't start until October 1st. Last school year we offered a virtual field trip, THIS year we would like to get students back on the farm! Our most popular field trip to the farm is our "Growing Forward" field trip.

Dates fill quickly, so reserve yours today! Pre-K through 1st grade teachers should register for "Growing Forward" and 2nd-5th grade teachers should register for "Dig In" (see below). If you are interested in scheduling an in-person or virtual field trip please contact George Stefankis.

GROWING FORWARD

This is our K-12 Common Core agriculture and nutrition education program.  During this two hour hands-on program, students will rotate through a variety of engaging outdoor classrooms and learning spaces on the farm. In each,  they will learn about growing healthy food, building healthy soil, and nutrition- through different lessons including composting and vermi-culture, whole grains and honey bees, chickens, farm chores, and more!  Students will also be offered garden-fresh snacks and our famous, farm-raised popcorn.

The program is only offered on Tuesday and Thursdays (with some Wednesdays).

The fee for Growing Forward is $6/student. While we DO NOT charge teachers or chaperones, we DO recommend a ratio of 1 adult to every 6-8 students.

4-H Healthy Living Ambassadors

The 4-H Healthy Living Ambassadors Club offers middle and high school students the opportunity to become leaders to promote healthy lifestyle choices and sustainability within their communities. This club offers hands-on fun with a variety of projects to choose from, monthly community meetings, as well as community service. Youth ages 12-18 can apply to join this afterschool club each year in September. For more information, contact Elizabeth Sparks, esparks@cals.arizona.edu.

Camps

Over the summer of 2021, TVF offered 16 weeks of Farm, Culinary, and Outdoor Adventure camps for youth ages 4-14 and as many weeks of leadership opportunities for youth ages 12-19. Check back in early 2022 to hear about next summer's camp and leadership opportunities.  Registration goes live on March 1st, 2022.
