MTAC 5: Rio Chama River Rafting Camp

MTAC 5: Rio Chama River Rafting Camp

Dates: July 30th-August 3rd, 2026

4 Nights/5 Days

Start/Drop Off Location & Time: Albuquerque, NM

End/Pick Up Location & Time: Albuquerque, NM

Ages 14-18

Located in Northern New Mexico, the Rio Chama is a specified “wild and scenic" river, known for it’s colorful rock walls and abundant wildlife. We will start this adventure in Albuquerque, where we will meet and begin the drive to Abiquou, New Mexico. New Mexico River Adventures will meet us at the boat ramp the next morning to begin our 3 day river float. Campers will float, hike and participate in conservation activities while enjoying all the Chama River Wilderness has to offer. Our last night will be spent having a celebration dinner to reflect on our adventure. We will return to Albuquerque the next day for departure. Perfect for teens who love the outdoors—or want to try something new—this trip is all about building confidence, learning new skills, and experiencing the magic of the Rio Chama.

If you are not flying in, youth should be dropped off and picked up at our site in Albuquerque, NM. For safety purposes, the exact location of camper pick up and drop off will be released once your camper is fully registered.

Youth are to fly into Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ). Flight reimbursements are available up to $200 upon request.

You are welcome to bring your own river clothing and sun protection. All camping gear is included—just bring yourself, a good hat, sunscreen, and your adventurous spirit!

Your camper does not need to have prior camping experience, nor river rafting experience. This is, however, an adventure. There will be no showers, no real beds, no proper bathroom, and a whole lot of sand.

Campers are provided a sleeping pad and a sleeping bag. We spend most nights sleeping under the stars. Tents are available in the case of heavy rain, but are rarely used.

On the river, we use what we call the “groover system”. The “groover” is a box that holds all solid human waste. All liquid waste will be disposed of into the river. It’s a lot scarier than it sounds, and it becomes a highlight for many youth.

Our meals will be prepared by our NMRA guides. They can accommodate most allergies and everything is always delicious!
